Biopesticides

Neem

Even though we appreciate all animals that choose to live in our project areas, it can be necessary to protect certain cash crops from hungry critters. That is why, with help of Stichting Voeten in de Aarde, Lake Albert Foundation supports farmers in Uganda to develop their own cheap and easy biopesticide from the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica), which is abundant in Uganda. To utilize the neem tree as a pesticide, neem leaves are soaked in water or neem oil is extracted from its seeds and leaves. This natural substance contains compounds like azadirachtin, which acts as an insect repellent. Neem oil is effective against a variety of agricultural pests, including aphids, caterpillars, and mites. It can be applied as a foliar spray or incorporated into the soil to deter and control pest populations. Beyond its pesticidal qualities, neem oil also possesses antifungal properties, contributing to the prevention of plant diseases. No chemicals needed, no negative effects on humans or on animals!
